Patient Education
The St. Mary's Spine Program utilizes cutting edge technology in both surgical and non-surgical treatment of spinal disorders. In addition to traditional open surgical and injection techniques, our program offers expertise in minimally invasive surgery and total disk arthroplasty of the cervical and lumbar spine.
Spotlight Procedure
Balloon kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive treatment that can repair vertebral compression fractures (VCF) caused by primay or secondary (e.g. steroid induced) osteoporosis, cancer or benign lesions.
Orthopaedic balloons are used in an attempt to elevate the bone fragments of the fractured vertebra and return them to the correct position. Performed under local or general anesthesia, the procedure takes less than an hour and may require an overnight hospital stay.
